Merry Christmas!
Well, here we are again the night before Christmas. We all have our different ways of celebrating Christmas and each one is unique. In my family we have several little things that we do, so today was a busy day around here. I have brought and incorporated a few of my childhood traditions that I fondly remember to my family and love sharing them with my daughter who now delights in the little things too. However we have added our own too. One thing I remember from being a child was opening one gift on Christmas Eve so my daughter does that now and the joy she gets from it is so fulfilling. The other thing that we did today was go riding around to look at Christmas lights. It is a tradition that was started by my mom who was a two job working single mom who couldn’t afford to put up many Christmas lights and even what we did put up wasn’t lit very much, keep in mind I am in my 30’s and there weren’t any energy efficient LED bulbs back then, so we would fill up the gas tank at about 75 cents a gallon, those were the days, and drive to the richer side of town and enjoy all the lights and decorations that the better off people could afford to share with us. It was a true highlight for me and now my family loves to go, we saw some really great lights tonight. I also had a fun time baking cookies for Santa with my daughter and decorating them with the family this evening, we make our soft and chewy sugar cookies from scratch and then some homemade icing in multiple bright colors, this year we even made edible glitter, super easy, fun and tasty! To finish the day off my daughter wrote a letter to Santa, who yes will write back as he always does and so does the tooth fairy and Easter Bunny, and she set out a plate of cookies for Santa and some carrot and celery sticks for the reindeer she never forgets them, she has me put the milk out later so it doesn’t spoil haha. We will give one last check to the NORAD Santa Tracker and she will tuck in for the night and await the big guys arrival. Tomorrow we will have our favorite Christmas dinner of more childhood memories and traditions for me of Ham, sweet rice and buttered cabbage, I told you I grew up poor, but it was heaven when mom made ham and sweet rice! Sometime tomorrowwe will settle down on the couch and watch A Christmas Story on TBS and also grab the dvd of How the Grinch Stole Christmas / Horton Hears a Who! Christmas is just not Christmas without them all. All and all it is as it is most years it’s not the presents that we give or get it’s the memories that we keep. So no matter what holiday you celebrate this time of year I hope it is great and you can share it with family and friends and make many more memories for the future.
